Aljoud Dates - Raed Abujoda

Founded by Raed Abujoda, Aljoud Dates is a business which seeks to provide local more competitively priced substitutes to imported dates. The main problem which Raed identifies and seeks to address is the excessive waste in the date processing industry. Currently dates which are deemed unsuitable for packaging are discarded, however, such dates can be used to produce date paste as well as coffee. Therefore, Aljoud Dates acquires and processes such dates at competitive prices to produce preservative free date paste which is then sold competitively in local markets, he explains, “the waste in the date processing industry is very high, so I decided to start a business which acquires as well as processes such dates to sell the finished product locally at affordable prices.”

Aljoud dates adopts internationally certified methods for dates past production in order to appeal to potential customers. Currently Aljoud Dates targets bakeries and retail markets to be used in baked goods which is especially in demand during the holiday season. Raed, the founder, actively works to increase awareness regarding his products and attends trade fairs to provide samples of Aljoud processed dates, he explains how creating strong relationships with producers in order to strengthen his position in the market. Raed further explains how Aljoud Dates is working towards becoming certified as environmentally friendly Green Products to be sold in local as well as international markets.

With the right amount of funding Raed seeks to increase date paste production and distribute at least fifteen to twenty tons within the Palestinian market depending on his ability to fulfil market needs as well as to develop signature packaging to distinguish his products in the market. Aljoud Date packaging will include both production and expiration dates as well as nutritional value. Raed explains, “I want to develop my business to meet the needs of the Palestinian market, not only will I become financially independent but also I can continue to expand my businesses and positively affect the job market.”

Furthermore, Raed maintains, “Aljoud Dates uses Palestinian grown dates which are irrigated with fresh water and has a distinctive quality taste, not only are we contributing to the development of Palestinian industry but we are supporting local farmers by using their products for local markets.” He continues, “Our vision with Aljoud Dates is to provide jobs for women in the Jordan Valley as an alternative to unsecure jobs they are forced to take in settlements.”
