Autism Spectrum Disorder affects nearly 1 in 160 children on a global scale. With a range of conditions that manifest during early childhood development, children with ASD need all the support they can get.
For children with ASD, special attention needs to be given on an individual basis. Therefore, early age interventions are key. Support and care that puts the focus on social behavior, learning skills, and even heightened sensory awareness can make a world of difference for a child with ASD.
What many do not realize is that children with ASD develop at their own pace. Major developmental milestones like potty training require time and patience, which can be difficult for parents without the support or enough of an understanding of ASD.
With over 5 years’ experience as a behavior analyst, Amjed Shoughry began his professional career working with children with ASD, and soon realized that in Palestine and the greater MENA region, children with ASD did not have access to much-needed therapy or care. To start a conversation and work towards meaningful change, Shoughry immediately began work on an application designed to help parents with children within the autism spectrum.
Based on the main issues parents face with their growing child, potty training was the obvious place to start. “Individuals with ASD and other developmental disorders face greater obstacles with toilet training because of problems in communication, social interaction, sensory sensitivities or accepting changes,” says Shoughry.
To address these concerns Shoughry founded AutiPoti-the first Arabic software solution designed to help parents potty train their autistic children.
“Our solution is an accessible and user-friendly mobile application that can accompany and serve children, parents, and caregivers at all times and with one click,” says Shoughry. “Mastering activities of daily living like toilet training can make children with ASD and developmental disorders more independent and capable of developing new educational skills, thus bringing them one step closer to inclusive and equitable quality education.”
With an online support system that features an on-call behavior analyst, parents and caregivers are empowered with the professional support they need, when they need it. AutiPoti also includes a data collection feature to help track progress and optimize the trainings for the children.
Along with Founder and CEO Shoughry, the AutiPoti team includes Omar Kamal, an experienced senior executive in the industry. Kamal is the CEO of ProGineer, a leading Palestinian software outsourcing company serving technology businesses and their respective customers in Silicon Valley, Europe, and Far East Asia. Rounding off the team is Samer Al Qutob, an Electrical Engineer with a Ph.D. in Artificial Intelligence.
To get to the next level, Shoughry is looking to secure 100K USD to scale and further optimize AutiPoti, with key areas of support in product development, marketing, and business development.
In terms of impact, Shoughry works tirelessly to raise awareness for children with ASD. “Caring for a child with an autism spectrum disorder (ASD) or developmental disabilities (DD) can be a very challenging task for parents and caregivers, let alone those in the West Bank and Gaza who face additional challenges associated with the socio-political reality they live.”
