Tawazon - In Conversation with Founder Suna Zoabi-Othman

The meditation and mindfulness industry is booming. In the U.S. alone the meditation industry raked in well over 1 billion U. S dollars in 2017 alone, and by 2022 will surpass 2 billion. This doesn’t even begin to account for the revenue thousands of meditation apps generate on a daily basis.

This billion-dollar industry is unquestionably conquering people across the globe. The opportunity to find moments of peace, tranquility and even a sense of rejuvenation amidst the hectic nature of our daily lives with mindful meditation has opened the doors to a global phenomenon that is nowhere near slowing down.

But what is more interesting is how the corporate world is tapping into the power of meditation to increase productivity while promoting a healthy work environment. Back in 2016, the business publication Fortune reported that 22% of employers in the U.S. introduced meditation and mindfulness trainings to their workplaces, which has only doubled since then. With corporate giants like Apple, Google and Nike integrating meditation to their daily work environments, it is no wonder that this industry has been embraced by major organizations and individuals at unprecedented rates.

The MENA region is no exception. Introducing the first exclusively Arabic meditation and mindfulness app to the MENA region is Suna Zoabi-Othman with  her transformational startup, Tawazon. MENACatalyst had the great opportunity to meet with Zoabi-Othman and learn how Tawazon is set to disrupt markets across the region.

What is Tawazon and how does it work?

Tawazon is an application that provides five to ten minutes of short daily meditation sessions to help users reach their highest levels of peace of mind and relaxation. Meditation is scientifically proven to uplift the happy hormones of your body like serotonin, melatonin, and endorphins which helps reduce anxiety and stress and uplifts the mind. And using daily meditation training for six weeks has been proven by leading universities around the world to have both mental and physical positive effects.

We offer a free app that allows users to experience the sessions for free. If they like it and wish to experience all that Tawazon has to offer, the full app can be purchased on Android or IOS for just 9 USD a month, or 59 USD for the whole year.

We have also developed a children’s section so that the whole family can benefit from Tawazon. So it is very affordable and appeals to everyone, and as an added bonus we offer family sharing.

Why inspired you to turn to meditation?

I studied chemical engineering and worked in the field for 13 years. Lately, I began meditating which has helped me ease the stress that I have been experiencing in my job. Apart from my job, I felt that something was missing in my life, and although I reached my personal and professional goals, I needed something to help me find my balance and reconnect with myself and the world around me. Meditation has helped me shut down everything else and just listen to myself.

I wanted to make a tool that appealed to everyone because I am a mother, so I included a section, supervised and specialized by our doctor Shafiq Masalha and our product Manager Mrs. Eilda Zaghmout for kids. This section provides meditations to help kids deal with the fears and anxiety they might face from their school, homes or general environment.

Because of this, I was inspired to bring the power of meditation to the Arab World. So I started Tawazon as an Arabic-based company that uplifts humanity and is in the service of people.

What do you envision for Tawazon?

To be the leading meditation and mindfulness company in the Middle East that provides all the scientific and professional tools for wellness, wellbeing and mental health.

The Arabic World is rapidly progressing when it comes to mobile app development and within the last five years we are beginning to see several fine and well-sophisticated apps. Because of this we have made a huge effort in the UX and UI of Tawazon. We have optimized the design, visuals, and audio of our app to improve functionality and most importantly appeal to all users.

And to spread the word, we have developed a strong presence on our social media platforms like Instagram and Facebook, and we are always looking to increase our media coverage to help get the word out there.

Who makes up the Tawazon team?

We are a team of nine. We have a great group of people from all over Palestine, including psychologists, meditation and yoga experts, software engineers, UX and UI developers, and business experts.

What is the impact you are working to achieve?

Tawazon is about people, with it I want to help reduce the stress and negative thoughts people experience across the Middle East while uplifting humanity. We also have a public school program where we go to the schools and present meditations to the students and teachers.

What advice do you have for aspiring entrepreneurs?

My advice would be first to meditate, know what you want first and then plan. Listen to your real voice and self then bring people in that believe in your vision and can help you realize it. Then comes the business plan. A business plan will change, but the core will remain, and then you can build on that.

At this stage, what type of support are you looking for?

At this point we are looking for networking opportunities, building relationships with business enablers and enhancing our media coverage.
